The Chuvash Republic is located in the central part of the Russian Federation on the right bank of the Volga River. The territory is 18,300 km2. In the west the republic borders on Nizhnii Novgorod oblast, in the north – on the Republic of Marii El, in the east – on Ulyanovsk oblast, in the south-west –on the Republic of Mordovia. The capital is the city of Cheboksary (the population is 474 000 people).
